The Rehans of Kalowal
The Rehan (also spelled Rahan) is a historically significant clan with roots that trace back to the ancient warrior castes of India, particularly the Kshatriyas of the 6th century. Traditionally associated with the Rajputs—India’s storied martial aristocracy—the Rehans have long been recognized for their warrior heritage and feudal leadership. However, their precise origins remain uncertain, as historical records and oral traditions suggest dual affiliations.
While the clan maintains connections to the Rajputs, there are also strong and compelling links to the Khokhars—an influential and once-dominant tribal confederation in Punjab. In particular, the Rehans are thought to be closely tied to the Khokhars of the Kirana Hills region, a rugged and strategically important area in the western Salt Range. The Khokhars were known for their fierce independence, martial prowess, and resistance to external domination, especially during the early Muslim invasions and later under Delhi Sultanate rule.
The Rehans, though smaller in number compared to some neighboring clans, historically held control over the Kalowal tract in the old Shahpur District, now part of the Sargodha region in Punjab. Their governance of this territory reflects their standing and influence in the regional hierarchy of landholding warrior clans.
